BT-BroadbandBT Broadband has been rolling out fibre steadily in the last few months. This is in conjunction with the government’s Broadband Delivery UK project, which aims to provide universal broadband access of at least 2Mbps in Britain. BDUK is also pushing for next-generation broadband networks to be set up in the UK by 2015.

BT had previously announced that their fibre deployment would be completed in 2015. However, they were working ahead of schedule and has since revealed that the rollout would be done by 2014.

Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, had praised BT, saying: “Superfast broadband is essential for achieving sustainable growth and it is vital that homes and businesses have access to it as soon as possible. BT’s accelerated fibre roll-out plan is great news for the UK.” He also added: “This investment means new jobs today, but also allows us to build the digital infrastructure we need for the jobs of tomorrow.”

BT has also pledged to speed things up at Devon with the 21st Century Network. As part of this project, more than 30,000 homes and businesses will be able to access superfast broadband speeds. The 21CN was launched back in 2006, where thousands of telephone exchanges have been upgraded since then.

Now BT has revealed that more users will have their networks upgraded by summer of next year. Forty five thousand more homes and establishments in Devon will be able to benefit from BT’s latest series of rollouts. Some of areas to benefit include Axminster, Crediton, Cullompton, Ivybridge Ottery St Mary, South Molton and Tiverton.
