Kilmarnock to benefit from high-speed broadband upgrades

Dec 28 2011 / By Hazel Chua

OpenreachFaster broadband translates to a lot of saved time, effort, and money. It has also been found to be an important factor in businesses and in the tourism industry. These, among other reasons, are why superfast broadband connections are desired by almost every Internet user, all over the world.

Households and business establishments in Kilmarnock will be happy to hear that their broadband connections was in line to receive a boost from BT. Over 21,300 users will be able to benefit from BT Broadband’s latest series of broadband rollouts in Scotland.

BT is expanding their superfast fibre broadband services through Openreach. The firm plans to provide at least two thirds of the UK with fibre connections by the end of 2014.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, said: “This is the biggest fibre broadband announcement we’ve made to date in Scotland, almost doubling the number of exchange areas being upgraded across the country, and includes our first fibre deployments in Ayrshire. It marks a major investment in infrastructure which will give the country a tremendous boost. Next generation broadband is essential for our nation’s economic growth so it’s brilliant to be ending 2011 on such a high note.”

He added: “We are making rapid progress with super-fast broadband. More than six million UK premises can now access the high-speed technology and last month we announced that two thirds of UK premises will have access by the end of 2014, a year earlier than planned. And we’re not forgetting the final third – largely rural areas which we have always said will require a partnership approach with the public sector to provide access to the new technology. BT has the strength and experience to deliver challenging projects and we are determined to be at the forefront of taking the technology to the final third.”

This news has been met favourably by local government officials.

MP Cathy Jamieson, stated: “I have pressed the case in Parliament, with Ministers, with East Ayrshire Council and with BT. This announcement will be a boost for local businesses, as well as for local residents who want to use the Internet for study and leisure. But there are still rural parts of the constituency which need more support to ensure everyone has access to broadband, and I want to see funding allocated by the UK and Scottish Governments to help provide affordable options for people in the outlying areas. This success is a welcome step forward, but I will continue to campaign for further improvements.”
