Google search engine now used by the Yahoo portal in the UK
Although many thought that the new search tool, Bing would be chosen when Yahoo Search decided to replace some of its properties but it now appears to be Google that has been chosen.
The search engine Google has been chosen to power the search area of the website for broadband subscribers of British Telecom, along with the collaboration of Yahoo.
Many of the Yahoo services, which included search tools, were provided to BT broadband users by the co-branded portal that was launched back in 2003. In order for BT to bring in increased overall revenue it has now decided to increase the number of users searching through its portal by bringing onboard Google, which currently has a market share in the UK of around 90 percent.
A report from connected internet showed that compared to Yahoo there were around two to three times more searches made on Google and this is also a likely reason why this choice was made.
Yahoo has come to an agreement to sell its search business to Microsoft at the same time as this deal with Google is going through, which means that an searches now made on Yahoo properties are now powered by Bing, although the design and branding will be retained by Yahoo. Ad sales for major customers of both companies will now, however, be completely controlled by Yahoo.
As long as this new deal is approved by the authorities it will provide Bing with 30 percent market share in the US and will slowly be put in place over the 10 years that the agreement lasts.
A partnership with Google is not a new thing for Yahoo after it attempted to team up with the search provider last year in an advertisement deal that eventually fell through due to government concerns. The deal attempt came following a breakdown in talks with Microsoft.
