Glasgow to get next gen broadband sooner than expected

Aug 18 2009 / By Richard Patterson

It has been revealed that Glasgow is set to start benefiting from next generation fibre based broadband much quicker than had been expected following objections that were lodged about a trial that has been running in London.

A trial based around fibre based next generation broadband has been taking place in the Muswell Hill area of London recently, but some of the local residents in the area have objected to the pilot stating that the fibre cabinets are an eyesore and are far too large. The complaints from the residents of this conservation area of London has resulted in the trial being suspended in part of the Muswell Hill area.

However, this could prove to be good news for some residents in Glasgow, as some areas of the city are set to be pulled into the pilot scheme later this year to make up for the suspensions in London. The areas that have been mentioned so far in the city are Hillington, Cardonald and Crookston.

An official from BT said: “Glasgow is being brought forward as a result of some of the issues that we’re experiencing in Muswell Hill.” He also stated that the exchange that was going to be used for the fibre optic broadband next generation trial in Glasgow would be the halfway exchange.

Those living in the areas of Glasgow that form part of the trial should be able to enjoy super fast broadband speeds if all goes to plan. BT has said that in the first stages of the trial those living in the affected areas should be receiving download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upload speeds of 5-10Mbps.
