Communications giant BT has recently broken the barrier by signing up its five millionth broadband customer, becoming the first Internet service provider to break that particular barrier.

It has been announced recently that the communications giant BT has broken the numbers barriers after signing up its five millionth broadband customer. This makes BT the first Internet service provider to break that particular barrier, and the five millionth customer is said to have been signed up by the communications giant on 9th December.

There are now fourteen million broadband users in the UK according to recent figures, and this is a far cry from the relatively paltry one hundred and thirty five thousand people that used the service just seven years ago. John Petter, the Managing Director of BT’s consumer division, said that the company was pleased that take up of broadband was still strong, and that this technology had the ability to make real changes to peoples’ business and personal lives.

He stated: “Broadband has the ability to transform people’s lives and the fact that we are still showing strong take-up when there are more than 14m ADSL broadband customers in the UK is testament to the unique benefits of being connected. The UK’s intensely competitive market for broadband has meant that UK customers have enjoyed superb innovation and low prices.”

Elizabeth Patterson was the five millionth customer to be signed up, and the chip shop worker was delighted to learn she had won an all expenses paid trip to see the winter Olympics in Vancouver as a prize. She said: “I am really excited to have won this prize, as I have never been to Canada before. I decided to sign up for broadband so that I could shop online for Christmas presents and so that my son Jamie, who is 11, can use the internet to help with his homework.”
