Consumers quoted £150,000 for broadband from BT
A customer in a rural area in Wales was shocked recently after she received a letter quoting her one hundred and fifty thousand pounds to have broadband services installed by BT.
For rural villages and areas in the UK it can be difficult to manage with little or no access to broadband, and it is hoped that the lack of access is something that will be dealt with as the new coalition government puts its measures into place with regards to the rollout of broadband across the country, which could help to bridge the digital divide.
One pensioner, however, decided to take matters into her own hands and made an enquiry with BT over having a broadband connection activated. The consumer, who lives in Salem in Wales, which is a village of around fifty properties none of which have broadband, had been longing for broadband access for years.
However, having made the enquiry she was horrified to learn that the cost of having broadband activated would be around one hundred and fifty thousand pounds. BT explained in the letter that they would be prepared to fund eight thousand pounds of this cost themselves. The seventy one year old said that she could not believe her eyes when she saw the letter.
She said: “I phoned BT and said surely this is a typing error and the girl said ‘No, there’s been no mistake, other people have had bills for much more than this’.”She also said that there were major towns nearby where broadband access was available, adding: “It’s outrageous. I’m not on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere – it’s rural but not a wilderness.
