Consumer demand won’t be met by BT super fast rollout

November 13th, 2009 by Richard

A recent study has shown that consumer demand in the UK is unlikely to be met by the rollout of super-fast broadband by communications giant BT.

Communications giant BT has ambitious and costly plans to roll out super-fast broadband in the UK to try and get as many consumers and businesses on high speed broadband as quickly as possible. However, a recent study has indicated that consumer demand in the UK will not be met by the rollout of super-fast broadband by BT.

Officials have claimed that BT’s super-fast next generation broadband access is likely to be inadequate compared to the demand for this service from consumers and businesses in the UK. The study was carried out by broadband analyst Point Topic, and a map was created using coloured areas on a map reflecting the demand for the service amongst households in the UK.

Once this map had been created a plan of BT’s proposed next generation broadband sites was placed over the coloured map but showed that the demand for the service definitely outweighed the supply from BT. Officials have said that this could result in the UK being left behind compared to many other countries when it comes to the speed of broadband services.

The group said that lack of access to high speed broadband for some areas could “cause heated controversy as many customers discover they cannot get the new high-speed services which their neighbours enjoy. As NGA services develop - high-quality video communication, total immersion in online games, simultaneous broadband access for multiple home users - the gap will seem increasingly unacceptable.” An analyst from the group added: “The current plans won’t even cover half of the areas of high demand.”
