Conservation groups stand in the way of high speed broadband for Brighton

According to recent reports a number of conservation groups are standing in the way of high speed broadband in the Brighton area by trying to stop the new BT broadband boxes from being installed.

Many people are keen to be able to get higher speed broadband services for both personal and business use, and this is something that communications giant BT is trying to resolve by installing new BT broadband boxes that could bring super-fast broadband services to different parts of the UK. One of the areas that are supposed to benefit from this higher speed broadband is Brighton.

However, according to a recent report a number of conservation groups could be standing in the way of Brighton getting access to superfast broadband by opposing plans to have the BT broadband boxes that are necessary to roll out the technology in the area installed.

The new BT broadband boxes are larger than the existing boxes for copper wire services, and the conservation groups are opposing them due to their sizes, appearance, and placement. The five conservation groups that have formed a coalition to oppose the plans are the Regency Society, Montpelier and Clifton Society, Kemp Town Society, Regency Square Area Society, Brighton Society and Kingscliffe Society.

An official from BT said: “We do fully appreciate the concerns of the conservation and amenities committees regarding the siting of our super-fast broadband cabinets in certain parts of the city. We are committed to working with local authorities to minimise the visual impact of the new street cabinets, and have done this successfully in other conservation areas.”
