Claims of ‘instant internet’ gets BT advert pulled

Aug 5 2010 / By Richard Patterson

It has been reported that claims of being able to get ‘instant internet’ have resulted in an advertisement for the BT Infinity broadband service being pulled by authorities.

Over recent years authorities have been clamping down severely on advertisements run by broadband and internet provider, with a lot of concern having been expressed over providers misleading consumers with the claims that they make in their advertisement when it comes to areas of the service such as speed and coverage.

It has now been revealed that communications giant BT has received a rap on the knuckles over one of its latest advertisements relating to its new super-fast broadband service, which is called Infinity. Following a series of complaints the Advertising Standards Agency has said that the advertisement could be construed as misleading.

According to reports a number of complaints were made following a run of the advertisement from BT for its Infinity broadband service. The complaints claimed that the advertisements were misleading because they indicated that downloads could be performed in an instant, and following complaints the Advertising Standards Agency was brought in to investigate.

BT has claimed that its ads were not misleading and compared its claim of instant internet to ads for instant coffee. The company said that the word instant was not meant to be taken as a literal definition, an added that it provided information on typical download speeds elsewhere in the advertisements. The ASA said, however, that it had seen no evidence to back up those quoted times, and has demanded that BT change the ads so that they cannot be construed as misleading.
