BT will increase number of people able to get faster broadband by 2011
Communications giant BT has recently announced that by 2011 it aims to ensure that at least seventy five percent of the country can enjoy access to its next generation broadband network.
It has been revealed recently that the communications giant BT is hoping to be able to provide a rising number of consumers with access to next generation broadband over the next couple of years with aims of almost doubling the number of businesses and households that will be able to benefit from faster broadband over its copper lines.
BT has ambitions that include providing around seventy five percent of the nation with access to faster broadband via its copper lines by 2011. At present around forty percent of the UK is able to access faster broadband via the provider’s copper network, with speeds of up to 24Mbps at present. However, BT Wholesale has said that it wants to nearly double this figure by the spring of 2011.
It is thought that the plan will go a long way towards helping the government’s Digital Britain plan come to fruition, which involves providing universal access to broadband across the nation by 2012 with minimum speeds of 2Mbps. At present whilst the BT network is able to reach around ninety nine percent of the UK with speeds of up to 8Mbps many receive far slower speeds as a result of their proximity from the local exchange.
BT is also planning to roll out superfast broadband via its fibre optic network to around forty percent of the country by 2012, with around one and a half million homes expected to be connected to the service by next summer according to recent reports.
