It has been announced by the communications giant BT that its super-fast broadband network will be in place by 2012 in time for the Olympics.

It has been announced recently by communications giant BT that its super-fast broadband network will be set up in time for the forthcoming Olympics in 2012. The £1.5 billion network from BT is aiming to provide consumers with speeds of up to 100Mbps in some cases. The network will, however, only be able to provide high speed broadband to around forty percent of homes, mostly in urban areas.

Originally the rollout of the super-fast network from BT had been scheduled for completion in 2013. However, according to reports the telecommunication giant is now ahead of schedule with the rollout of the network, and is confidence that it will be completed in 2012 in time for the Olympics.

One official from the company said that it was hoped that around four million consumers will have access to the super-fast network as early as the end of next year, and by the time the Olympics come around in July of 2012 the company is hoping that around ten million homes will have access to the higher-speed broadband network.

The government wants ninety percent of the country to have access to super-fast broadband by 2017 but Ian Livingston, the CEO of BT, said that further clarity was required. He stated: “If you look around the world, several governments are pro-actively supporting the roll out of fibre broadband. There’s still a debate in the UK – which is fine – but we need our politicians to decide how much of a priority fibre broadband is.”
