BT reveals latest list of towns to get faster broadband

Dec 24 2011 / By Hazel Chua

SBT Broadband has been very busy this year. The Internet service provider has stuck it out in the procurement process for broadband projects in Scotland, rolled out fibre at an accelerated schedule, and have upgraded Ethernet networks all over the country. The firm is one of the providers that are working with the government in the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project.

The primary goals of BDUK are to provide universal broadband access to the entire UK. The speeds of these connections should be at least 2Mbps. Furthermore, the government is hoping to bring next-generation broadband technology to ninety percent of Britain by the year 2015.

BT has been rolling out fibre and is continuing to do at full speed. It was revealed earlier that more than half of the people in Britain will be able to enjoy superfast broadband speeds by next year. When these upgrades by BT are completed, it is expected that ninety percent of the UK population will be able to have connection speeds of 25Mbps and above.

Now BT has announced that 47 communities in Scotland have received the latest upgrades as part of their roll out. These areas include Angus, Ayrshire, the Scottish Borders, Fife, Grampian, the Highlands, Perthshire, Strathclyde and West Lothian.

The broadband giant hopes to provide high-speed Internet access to approximately 72% of all premises in Scotland.

BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said: “BT’s roll-out of faster broadband across Scotland is gathering pace. Earlier this month we announced plans which will make super-fast, fibre-based broadband available to 695,500 homes and businesses by the end of next year. Now we are able to confirm a further major investment in faster broadband speeds over copper lines.”
