BT now has more than 4.6 million broadband subscribers

Since entering into the broadband market BT has gone from strength to strength, and according to recent reports now has more than 4.6 million subscribers.

There are many standard and mobile broadband providers in the market these days, and the number of broadband providers has increased significantly over recent years, with the sector becoming more and more competitive. One of the major players in the broadband market for the last few years has been communications giant British Telecom, which has seen the number of broadband subscribers that it has steadily grow over time.

According to a recent report BT has seen continued growth in its number of broadband subscribers, and now has more than 4.6 million subscribers on its database, reflecting the popularity of the provider. The quarterly results that were released by the communications giant were up to 30th September of this year.
An official from BT stated: “We had 13.3 million wholesale broadband connections (DSL and LLU) at September 30, 2008, including 5.1 million local loop unbundled lines. There were 258,000 net additional broadband connections in the quarter. Our retail share of those net additions was 27%. In the maturing broadband market, we remain the UK’s number one retail broadband provider with a customer base of 4.6 million. BT’s retail market share of the DSL and LLU installed base was 34% at September 30, 2008.”

BT added: “Broadband revenue grew by 12 per cent year on year, with net additions of 69,000 in the second quarter, taking us to 4.6 million customers, and retaining our status as the UK’s most popular broadband supplier.”

However, BT has also recently reported that by the end of this financial year it will be cutting around ten thousand jobs, and amongst those to go will be agency staff, contract staff, and offshore workers.
