BT asks apartment renters to volunteer for 100 Mbps FTTP trial

BT has urged the owners of residential buildings in the UK, to sign up for the prototype version of the proposed super-fast broadband connection, to assess its speed in households. The company is looking for support from about 1,000 apartment renters to carry out their study.

The high speed broadband has been installed in many households across the country, and the company will introduce the Fibre- to- the- premises into those houses that agree to become a part of the FTTP trial. The test is conducted by a group of BT’s Openreach engineers.

The buildings that would participate in the pilot scheme will initially be allotted a downstream speed extending to a maximum of 100 Mbps. The speed will be improved later on, and would reach up to 300 Mbps if the subjects demand a faster connection during analysis. The company sources said that upstream speed provided by them is the fastest in the country.

The company’s Openreach next gen access MD Mike Galvin said they are keen to extend the benefits of BT’s super-fast services to those living in the apartments. And, response they got from the registration scheme indicates that customers are crying out for high speed internet connection, and they believes that it is a crucial factor to their overall development.

He added that BT is counting customers demand in their trials, and is very keen to get the involvement of landlords in the project.

BT has already invested £2.5- billion for installment of super-fast broadband in Blighty.  The company is hoping to bid for another £530- million from Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) fund for the scheme.

Last November, the government had confirmed the allocation of £100- million for the deployment of broadband networks in urban area, from the £5- billion national infrastructure investment pot. Now, it appears that BT will work in close association with the selected cities to obtain the required benefit.
