According to a recent newspaper report the communications giant BT is set to announce plans over expansion of its fibre based broadband network to coincide with the release of its full year results.
It has been announced in a recent newspaper report that the communications giant BT is set to announce expansion plans with regards to its fibre optic broadband network, which is currently set to be extended to forty percent of homes. It is thought that the plans for network expansion by BT will be released along with the company’s full year results.
Under the expansion plans BT is set to provide coverage to sixty six percent of homes rather than the current forty percent figure. The company is said to view the fibre based broadband network as a key source of revenue and a key asset that could lead to huge growth, and is therefore keen to get the expansion underway as soon as possible.
The report claims that the expansion of the network could lead to an increased chance of the communications giant being able to strike wholesale deals with competitors, which is some that officials have said is vital if BT wants to make a return on its investment in fibre based broadband networks. BT will be in competition with Virgin Media, which already offers a great deal of coverage through its own fibre based networks.
Politicians have said that they are keen to see BT expand its fibre based broadband networks, and BT has said that it believes that many people will be interested in signing up to high speed broadband because of the increase in the number of people that are streaming data online or playing online games, both of which require higher speeds.
