BT adds spark to broadband bundle competition
According to an industry expert a new offer from BT that provides digital television with Sky Sports 1 and 2 has added a spark to the competition amongst broadband bundle providers.
A number of Internet providers and entertainment providers these days offer a range of bundle deals, with many offering broadband, television, and home phone services as part of a triple package. These broadband bundles have become very popular over recent years amongst consumers that want value for money and great choice, creating increased competition in the broadband bundle market.
According to one industry official the competition amongst broadband triple play package providers has now been stepped up following a new offer from BT Broadband, which enables consumers to enjoy digital television services with Sky Sports 1 and 2.
The main competition for triple play packages has previously been between media giants such as Virgin Media and BSkyB, although BT has increasingly become serious contender in the field. However, the offer of Sky Sport 1 and 2 with its digital television service has now increased the rivalry in this field, making the competition amongst providers tougher than ever.
One industry official said: “When BSkyB and Virgin offered broadband, often as a free adjunct to pay-TV, BT lost customers to them, so it had to make this move. Essentially, they are unbundling Sky’s pay-TV business and selling it under their own banner in just the same way Sky did to them when it was forced to wholesale its Openreach broadband service.”
