Younger people like to read newspapers online

Over recent years accessing and reading newspapers online has become increasingly popular, and according to a recent report has become a particular hit amongst younger consumers.

In years gone by reading the papers meant either arranging delivery through the newsagents so that you could have the paper delivered to the home or going out to fetch the paper from the shop or supermarket. However, with the Internet bursting onto the scenes some years ago the way in which people access the news has changed a great deal along with many other changes.

Many people are now going online to read the newspaper rather than actually reading a hard copy of a paper, and this is a trend that is apparently very popular amongst younger people around the world. One industry expert, Jeff Cole from the World Internet Project, said that newspaper sales are quickly declining as a result of this.

Cole claims that in some cases newspapers have lost up to twenty five percent of print sales over the past twelve months, and with younger people being more confident and accustomed to going online many are perfectly happy to read the newspaper via the internet using their broadband connections rather than having to read a print copy.

Cole said: “Digital media is growing — in number and consumption rates. And with rapidly increasing Internet penetration worldwide, such consumption will only continue to grow. Teenagers are not interested in reading newspapers offline. Studies show that teens just don’t care about news, they just care about what’s happening on Twitter and Facebook.”
