Web based TV would not be more popular through faster broadband

A recent report has claimed that web based TV watching would not necessarily become more popular if faster broadband speeds were available.

Many people these days watch some of their favourite shows and movies via the Internet, and online TV has become quite popular amongst certain groups. However, many officials believe that this platform would become even more popular if faster broadband services were available, as this would make it more convenient and easier for consumers to engage in web based viewing.

However, according to one recent report the popularity of web based viewing would not necessarily increase as a result of faster broadband speeds becoming available. Research was carried out by YouGov on behalf of Deloitte, and involved polling over four thousand consumers.

Of all the respondents that took part in the survey around fifty five percent said that having faster, more reliable broadband would not make them watch more programmes online. Out of the people that already watched web based TV forty three percent said that it was for less than fifteen minutes a day, and just thirteen percent said that it was for more than fifteen minutes a day.

An official from Deloitte said: “The data indicates that there may not be a direct link between faster broadband and the use of online video, and it is possible that people who watch online video believe that they have sufficient speed. In fact, faster broadband would be less of a driver of demand in 2010 compared to 2009. It is possible that the figures for video on-demand may change in the year ahead. 2010 has seen a greater take up of smartphone devices and the emergence of net tablets, which could potentially skew how and when viewers choose to watch their favourite television programmes.
