Virgin Media slates misleading broadband ads

Broadband and communications giant Virgin Media has recently slated misleading broadband advertisements, stating that some Internet Service Providers are clearly misleading consumers when they advertise their broadband speeds.

There has been a lot of debate and controversy recently over Internet Service Providers allegedly advertising their broadband service speeds in a misleading way, and only recently an advertisement by the communications giant BT was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority as a result of complaints claiming that the ads were misleading with regards to speed.

It has now been revealed that broadband and media giant Virgin Media has been slating Internet Service Providers with regards to advertising misleading speeds. This comes after a survey of one thousand people showed that ninety percent of them thought that broadband advertising was misleading.

Officials from Virgin Media said that whilst some ISPs are advertising up to speeds of 20Mbps or 24Mbps, many were delivery low average broadband speeds of around 5Mbps. This makes it difficult for consumers to choose a service that suits them because they never know what speed they will actually get regardless of the speed that is advertised.

An official from Virgin Media said: “People are paying for faster and faster broadband but being ripped off by unscrupulous providers who can’t deliver their promised speeds to even a single customer. A change in advertising is urgently needed to build consumer confidence in super-fast broadband and the industry more generally. In the meantime, I hope other ISPs will quickly follow Virgin Media’s lead by disclosing their own monthly performance data so people can make an informed decision about how to spend their money.”
