UK experiences drop in broadband rankings

It has been reported that the UK has seen a drop in its position when it comes to worldwide broadband rankings, and many believe that it will see no significant improvement until widespread fibre based services are available.

Reports have been released recently showing that the UK has fallen in terms of its position when it comes to worldwide broadband rankings. According to the report the UK has slipped to position number eighteen on the rankings, and officials believe that no significant improvement can be made until widespread fibre based broadband with high speeds is made available in the UK.

The report was compiled by Cisco and the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, which placed the UK is position number eighteen. The ranking was for the quality of the broadband, and it reflected a drop of one place from last year when the UK was placed at position number seventeen.

An official involved in the compilation of the report said that despite the fact that the UK had slipped one place in the rankings it was still ‘holding its own’ when it came to broadband. He said that this was because the UK was still doing well when taking into account the rate of development of broadband technology in other countries.

He added that the UK could move up in the rankings as broadband technology improved, stating: “The next step-change, in the UK especially, is more deployment of fibre. Fibre deployment will help us to step into that next band. BT’s plans for fibre deployment will make a change.”
