UK could be left lagging in the broadband race

Feb 17 2011 / By Richard Patterson

A recent report has suggested that despite plans by the government to ensure that the UK has the best broadband network in Europe by 2015 the nation could actually be left lagging behind.

The coalition government has announced ambitious plans recently to help ensure that Britain has the best broadband network in Europe by 2015. However, despite these ambitions it has been suggested in a recent report that the nation could actually be left lagging behind in the broadband race because it needs to speed up with regards to Fibre to the Home (FTTH) networks.

According to reports Chris Holden, president of the FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) Council Europe has recently said that Britain is one of a number of European countries that needs to speed up with regards to FTTH networks, otherwise they will simply be overtaken by other emerging economies. Germany and Spain were amongst the other countries that were mentioned as needing to improve by Holden.

According to Denis McCauley, director of global technology research at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), there is a “broad recognition that the UK lags behind other nations in key areas of digital development”. He said that the rollout of next generation services was one of the problem areas that had been highlighted.

The EIU rankings for last year showed that the UK had slipped by one place. These rankings provide information on how countries make the most of the use of information and communications technology to benefit the economy as well as to provide social benefits.
