UK Broadband connections break 16 million barrier

According to figures released from Ofcom the number of UK broadband connections has now soared past the sixteen million mark.

A recent report that has been released by the communications regulator, Ofcom, has shown that the number of broadband connections in the UK has now passed the sixteen million mark. The figures show that there are now around 16.2 million broadband connections in the UK.

The data comes from a report that is compiled to Ofcom to highlight some of the key movements in the fixed broadband, mobile broadband, and communications market. This level of broadband connections was reached in the first quarter of this year, reflecting an increase of around six hundred thousand.

The Ofcom report also highlighted trends and changes with regards to the mobile phone market and fixed calls and access. During the first quarter of the year it was found that BT’s share of the broadband market had not changed, still standing at 26.5 percent, although the total number of connections had gone up by a significant level. Prior to the final quarter of 2007 the BT share of the market had been slowly rising since 2006 according to figures on the report.

Ofcom has compiled the data from its research and a summary of its findings can be found in PDF format on the Ofcom website at: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/cm/tables/q1_2008/q12008.pdf.

In the meantime many people continue to speculate with regards to whether the number of fixed line broadband connections in the UK will be affected in the future by the increasing popularity of mobile broadband. Some have suggested that some people will ditch fixed line broadband in favour of mobile broadband, but others have stated that people are more likely to take on mobile broadband to complement their fixed line service.
