The Broadband Network Energy Efficiency Summit that ran alongside the Broadband World Forum-Europe exhibition and conference in Paris saw a number of key drivers discussed including expanding the promotion of the benefits of broadband’s dematerialization, identifying new opportunities and standards gaps for future collaboration and building on current efforts towards network energy efficiency.

Some of the foremost experts in the world were brought together to discuss issues relating to green telecommunications at this private summit, and this included leading industry for a and standards bodies like the Broadband Forum, GeSI, ATIS, the ITU-T,HGI, ETSI and EE-IOCG.

Areas of new opportunities and potential overlap for joint activity and liaison, current work in progress and interactive discussions regarding recent achievements were the areas included in the Summit. The actions needed to move the industry forward were formed during the discussion process, which highlighted the various areas of collaboration.

The Director of Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) at the ITU-T, Malcolm Johnson said “The ICT industry is already very responsible and proactive in terms of its own carbon footprint and using ICTs to combat climate change in all sectors, such as empowering the potential impact of travel reductions on the carbon footprint, and it’s very important for the industry to be passing on the message of these dematerialization benefits. It was hugely positive for all the organizations involved to come together for the Broadband Network Energy Efficiency Summit, building on the work already underway and discussing ways to continue the momentum.”

The pursuit of a high level agreement with regards to collaboration and activity were agreed in the recent meeting. The analysis of all current work to make sure any overlaps are reduced will be the first thing to be looked at and then the addressing of any gaps that are found will be the next step.
