The 100Mbps Fibrecity project starts rolling out in Bournemouth

Oct 17 2008 / By Rob Webber

After many months of planning H20 networks this week made the announcement that is will be beginning the rollout of its new 100Mbps super high-speed broadband service throughout the Bournemouth area.

Work will begin this week as H20 networks start the deployment in Bournemouth of its next generation fibre optic broadband network. The new service will be made available to the BH10 and BH11 postcode areas for both businesses and homes. Speeds of up to 100Mbps will be made available to all users that sign up to the service once the fibre channel cabling is laid down.

The deadline has been given for both businesses and homes to opt in to the campaign which has so far cost £30 million. Opting in will give the network operator the permission to access the connection on the premises allowing them to connect users to the new network.

The H20 Networks Fibrecity will be unique in the way it is installed as cables are laid down through the current sewerage network and as such will cause absolute minimum disruption to the area. Once the initial cabling is deployed the final stage of the cabling that runs to the premises of those who have opted into the new scheme will have a 20mm wide by 60-150mm deep “micro trench” dug allowing the cable to be laid.

Elfred Thomas, the CEO of H20 Network, spoke on the project saying “We are leading the way where other, far bigger organisations have failed to deliver. It is clear that private sector funding of these next generation networks is imperative to ensure that the UK is brought swiftly into the 21st Century as more and more of our businesses and homes use media rich services including video and IPTV which require large bandwidth.”
