It’s a great inconvenience when you’re stuck with a broadband connection that’s either slow or prone to service interruptions. With more and more of a person’s life entangled on the Internet, having a good broadband connection is a huge advantage and a wise investment. Aside from personal communications, many people make use of the World Wide Web as well to access information, conduct video chats and conferences, as well as send off business documents and files to colleagues and supervisors.

With all its uses, it’s no wonder that many in the region are clamoring for superfast broadband speeds. As per the government’s definition in the Broadband Delivery UK glossary of terms, superfast broadband is a connection “having a potential headline access speed of at least 20Mb, with no upper limit.”

BT Broadband is one of the firms that has been actively laying down fibre across the country to upgrade the service that they are currently offering their users. One such project that the broadband giant has embarked on is Superfast Cornwall, which aimed to bring high-speed broadband services to Cornwall. The scheme is a £132 million project that is run by BT in collaboration with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Convergence, the Cornwall Council and the Cornwall Development Company.

Such efforts haven’t gone unrecognised, because the project was recently awarded with the Best Project of the Year award at the recently concluded World Communication Awards (WCA).

The judges of the WCA included some leading IT experts. The judges stated that the Cornwall project was “a good example of a private company partnering with the public sector” in order to set up “Europe’s most ambitious rural deployment of super-fast broadband.”

Superfast Cornwall programme director for the Cornwall Development Company, Nigel Ashcroft, stated: “It is wonderful that the achievements of this pioneering partnership are being recognised on a world stage. It will provide a major boost for the future prosperity and wellbeing of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. A huge amount of work has already been undertaken by the partners to make this exciting initiative the envy of the world.”
