Speeds set to increase for home broadband users in Guernsey
Following an announcement from internet service provider, Sure that it will be looking at the pricing structure of its services, low-cost high-speed broadband services could soon be available to residential broadband users in Guernsey.
A new 8Mbps broadband connection was released this month by Sure at £17.99 per month and Jersey Telecom at £27.99 per month, which appears to have led to this latest announcement.
Although a 4Mbps broadband service costing £49.99 and an 8Mbps service costing £79.99 are already offered as business products by Sure, residential broadband users in Guernsey are currently only offered a 2Mbps service.
Home users do have the option to use these high-speed broadband services but the business community is the only area demanding these kind of speeds at the moment said Sure.
Paul Taylor, the marketing director for Sure said ‘We introduced Sure Pro four and eight mbps services before Jersey, but they are currently priced for the business community because that’s where there has been demand. We are investing £2million in expanding our network using street boxes so that we can meet the expected demand from customers for higher speeds. We will be reviewing our offering and consulting with other operators in the island, as we are legally required to do, and I expect that we will be able to make further announcements on our residential broadband services within a matter of months.’
The broadband service provider said that at some point soon it hoped to be changing its 2Mbps service in Guernsey in the same way that the island’s other providers were.
Taylor added ‘We are keen to supply competitively priced, higher speed broadband services for Guernsey, similar to those available in the UK, and plan to also offer four and eight mbps services later this year.’
