South Yorkshire Council Designed Digital Region and it is Losing Money
Digital Region, one of the ambitious flagship programs run by the South Yorkshire city council, and aimed at delivering super-fast internet to the rural areas, finds it difficult to proceed as some of the country’s prominent internet providers have backed themselves out of the scheme.

Sky and TalkTalk are among the big companies that don’t have much interest in the project. Some of the members questioned say that the failure of project is due to the insufficient number of people who, in reality, want to use super-fast service.
Since the corporate magnates kept away, the common men have to take the extra burden to make the project a reality. The venture was a viable initiative to bring the home and businesses in the area under the web of high- speed internet. A recent balance sheet published shows that more than £9 million was wasted in last year alone.
The infrastructure arrangement for the “Digital Revolution” was almost finished, and fiber-optic cables are drawn across the streets of South Yorkshire. Some of the people are all set to subscribe to the high- speed internet when the crisis occurred.
The £92 million project was at the crossroads, despite its potential to harvest immense project. The uncertainty surrounding the project will bring huge financial burden upon the common man.
Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, which is funded by the government, is asked to accumulate a sum of £4 million from the public to prevent the termination of the Digital Region project.
Meanwhile, the authorities reiterated their interest in the project and maintained that they will push the project further in spite of the financial difficulties, to see the benefit generated out of it.
However, it will be interesting to see how the authorities manage to get the fund required for the completion of Digital Region project.
