A new term dubbed SOSOs has been coined in Britain, and this refers to people that need to ‘Switch on to Switch off’ according to a recent report.
Over the years improved technology and a whole range of new services and gadgets has turned many a simple person into a technology hungry gadget master, and a recent report has suggested that these days a huge number of us feel lost unless we have constant access to the technology that we have come to rely on both for work and pleasure on a day to day basis.
The report suggested that two thirds of Brits have now become ‘SOCOs’, which refers to people that have the ‘Switch on to Switch off’. According to officials from The Future Laboratory, which conducted the research, these are people that have to be connected to technology such as mobile phones, mobile broadband, home broadband, and other forms of technology in order to switch off and relax.
Many of those that were polled as part of the research said that not being connected to services such as broadband made them anxious because they could not stay connected to friends and family. Others said that the inability to use the Internet to work and make money made them stressed, hence their reason for always needing to stay connected.
One official tried to explain why so many people feel anxious when not connected to services such as broadband or mobiles, stating: “At any moment, an urgent email may ping into an inbox, a client may call, an old friend may get in touch via Facebook or a family member may want to get in touch. Therefore, to disconnect from technology may mean missing something we cannot afford to. Always being connected actually becomes increasingly essential for peace of mind, further reinforcing SOSO values.”
