Social networking popularity being affected by improvements in broadband
It has been suggested in a recent report that the popularity of social networking sites may have been affected as a result of ongoing improvements in broadband.
According to a recent report there has been a slight drop in the use of social networking sites amongst younger consumers, and whilst for many people aged between fifteen and twenty four Facebook is their number one website, the overall popularity of social networking sites is said to have dropped.
Figures show that the popularity of Facebook has continued to grow across the globe, but in the UK the overall use of social networking sites amongst younger consumers has fallen by five percent since last year, dropping from fifty five percent of users frequenting social networking sites to fifty percent of users going on these sites.
Some industry officials have suggested that the reason behind the drop in social networking site popularity amongst young users in the UK is the improvements that have been seen with broadband services, which have made it easier, faster, and more convenient to enjoy other forms of entertainment such as streaming content like YouTube.
One industry official stated: “It’s really that they are moving on to new things and the improvement of broadband is behind that.” However, another said: “In fact, more 15- 24-year-olds are using social networking sites than a year ago, so there isn’t any particular aversion to the activity. What does appear to be happening is that younger users are beginning to consolidate around Facebook, and are spending less time on competing sites.”
