Slow broadband speeds are a problem for Cumbrian users
A recent study that was recently performed on a huge number of postcodes throughout the UK by a popular broadband news and information site has found that the Cumbrian region is one of the slowest areas for broaband in the country.
The News & Star newspaper recently learned that a recent study found that some of the slowest speeds for broadband in the UK can be found in Cumbria. A survey of 188 000 speed tests online over as many as 36 000 different post code areas were carried out by a popular broadband news and information site, with the finding showing that compared to many other areas across the UK the broadband connections in the Cumbria area were much slower.
Of the Cumbrians that participated in the study, many received average speeds of only 2.3Mbps, which came in well under the connection speeds for London broadband users who averaged 4.5Mbps according to the figures that were given to the News and Star exclusively. Next month will see WebWatch, the consumer research group looking into broadband speed more deeply.
Only 200 samples were used the provide the results for Cumbria, which was quite a low figure, and the resulting figures across the CA postcode area are only an average, although in showing the gap between the main cities in the UK and more rural areas for the provision of broadband services it provides a good illustration.
“You will see from our graph that there are very few “faster than 8 meg” connections in the area. These results show that the rural broadband speeds remain significantly below those in cities. This is likely to be due to both shorter telephone line lengths which help to sustain higher speed services, as well as more competition between wholesale suppliers in metropolitan areas,” Said a spokesman for the popular broadband news site.
