Slight fall in average broadband speeds in the UK
Recently released data has shown that the average broadband speed in the UK for the month of May suffered a slight drop, falling very slightly by 0.1Mbps.
With a range of reports relating to broadband speed tables suggesting that the UK is performing quite poorly in terms of broadband speeds compared to many other countries, many concerns have been raised over the average speeds that broadband users in the UK are receiving.
Figures have recently been released following speeds testing, and the results have shown that during the month of May there was a slight drop in the average broadband speeds seen in the UK. The average overall speed fell slightly for the month, dropping by a slight 0.1 percent. This took the average overall speed to 4.8Mbps.
First place on the speed test results table was taken once again by Virgin Media, which managed to achieve average broadband speeds of 8.7Mbps. O2 was top out of all of the copper wire ADSL providers and came in second place just behind Virgin Media, with average speeds of 5.7Mbps. Talk Talk took third place in this latest speed test survey, with average speeds of 4Mbps.
One industry expert said: “Many consumers have benefitted from faster download speeds as packages have been upgraded over the past year. But as ISPs advertise speeds of up to 20Mb and 24Mb broadband, they risk disappointing customers if they can’t deliver real improvements. Saying that, it will be very interesting to see how the take-up of superfast broadband will affect speeds over the coming year as more people sign up to Virgin Media’s 50Mb broadband package and BT continues its rollout of its 40Mb Infinity network.”
