Silver Surfers becoming increasingly comfortable online

Whilst the use of broadband and the Internet has often been associated with a younger age groups a recent report has revealed that older consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable using the Internet for a wide range of purposes.

In the past regular access to the Internet via broadband has often been associated with the younger generation, with many teens as well as people in their twenties, thirties, and even forties, spending a lot of their time online for both business and pleasure. However, it has now been revealed that a growing number of older consumers are becoming more and more comfortable spending time online for a variety of purposes.

Many so called Silver Surfers aged over fifty are now buying computers for their home and getting themselves connected so that they can enjoy the virtual world in the same way as younger consumers have been doing for years. These surfers are now using the Internet for everything from sorting their finances and reading the news to online shopping, keeping up with friends and family, and even online dating.

Officials from one online dating agency for mature people have said that there has been an increase in the number of visitors coming to the site, with the numbers appearing to grow every month. Amongst other factors one official from the site said that the success was clearly due to an increase in the number of Silver Surfers that were now getting online and feeling more comfortable whilst online.

He said: “The internet is no longer just a playground for the younger generation or early adopters. The mature market has evolved from using the internet as a simple information based medium, and they’re now using social networks for entertainment. As the retired generation usually have more free time available, we’re finding that our customers are spending a longer time on our site per visit than you would normally expect with a younger user.”
