Satellites could aid high speed broadband in the UK

It has been claimed following a recent study that satellite technology could play a big part in aiding high speed broadband in the UK.

It was shown in a recent study that the UK is lagging behind many other countries when it comes to broadband speeds, and ranked at number twenty six on the speed tables. However, research that was recently carried out has suggested that satellite technology could help to improve broadband services in the UK by aiding high speed broadband.

The study was carried out by the trade organisation UKspace and officials from the firm have said that the global space market could be worth as much as four hundred billion pounds by the year 2030. The company said that firms are increasingly turning to satellite technology in order to store information, and the storage capabilities of satellite meant that it could be a key part of improvements with high speed broadband.

One official from the organisation said that there were many potential benefits to using satellite technology. He said that with the UK having been ranked so far down in the global speed tables the part that satellite technology could play in aiding high speed broadband could be crucial. The average speed achieved by UK broadband users is just 3.5Mbps, whereas in South Korea the average speed is much higher at 14.6Mbps.

In a recent report the UKspace official said: “If you want to put more computation up there with more memory, storing things, it might start with broadband Internet. You get fast speeds in space, but it depends how wide the beams are and how many people are sharing it.”
