Satellite broadband could be on its way to the UK
With the arrival of its long awaited equipment Avanti has recently announced that it may not be too long now before the UK can start benefiting from satellite broadband.
With many areas of the UK unable to access broadband services many will welcome the news that affordable satellite broadband could soon be coming to the UK, and could help some people that have not been able to access broadband services through other means, which has created a distinct digital divide, which the government has been trying to address in its Digital Britain plans.
Satellite operator Avanti has recently announced that its long awaited equipment has arrived, and this means that it may be just a matter of months before areas of the UK are able to benefit from affordable satellite broadband services. The Avanti Highly Adaptable Satellite (HYLAS) equipment is said to have arrived at the Indian Space Research Organisation assembly plant.
Once the equipment has been launched into orbit some areas of the UK will be able to enjoy broadband for the first time. Although satellite broadband has been around for some time, the cost and equipment have often been an issue for consumers. It is thought that the cost of satellite broadband will now come down, partly as a result of the plans outlined in the Digital Britain Report.
The equipment will be prepared over the coming months, and according to reports it will be launched into orbit in around the spring or early summer of next year. An official from Avanti said: “The consensus in government, evidenced by this week’s select committee enquiry into broadband, shows that Avanti will be delivering a much needed and highly valued service across Europe.”
