Rural parts of Scotland could enjoy faster broadband

It has been reported that some rural parts of Scotland could look forward to faster broadband speeds as a result of planned upgrades to a number of telephone upgrades.

According to a recent report a number of rural areas in Scotland will be able to look forward to faster broadband speeds in the near future as a result of planned upgrades to a number of BT exchanges in the area. The upgrades form part of a three million pound move to improve broadband speeds in the area.

It is claimed that dozens exchanges in rural areas of Scotland are set to benefit from the upgrades according to the reports, and this comes as good news given the number of rural areas across the UK that are struggling to get adequate broadband access making things difficult for both residents and businesses in these areas. This is one of the issues that the government’s Digital Britain programme is aiming to sort out.

The speed of broadband in many of these rural areas is slow because of the proximity of the area from the nearest telephone exchange, but it is hoped that with the upgrades to the exchanges certain areas will be able to enjoy faster speeds despite their location compared to the exchange. It is thought that up to fifty sites in Scotland could be improved as part of the measures.

John Swinney, the Finance Secretary, stated: “After exploring the many challenges with BT, we are pleased that a way forward has been found allowing an exchange upgrade programme to take place.” He also said that the measure showed how committed the government was to improving broadband services in rural areas for residents and businesses.
