Rise of 50 percent in the number of videos viewed online in Britain
The latest figures from a major digital information vendor have shown a year on year increase of 50 percent in the number of videos that have been watched over the internet in the UK.
The Digital market intelligence vendor, ComScore has recently released new figures that have shown a growth of almost 50 percent in the amount of videos that broadband users in the UK have been watching compare to the same time last year.
April 2008 saw a total of 3.2 billion videos watch over the internet in the UK, which compares to an April 2009 figure of 4.7 billion giving a rise of 47 percent. A growth in traffic of 58 percent was seen on the Google website giving it a total of 2.4 billion hits, which compared to the 271 million views of the nine closest internet sites gives it a total ten times greater than their combined hits. With a total of 79 million views the BBC website was the closest rival in terms of views.
There is a growing concern now that many customers could soon face what is known as ‘bandwidth throttling’ being implemented by many ISP’s, which means that their download speeds and capacity are severely reduced, unless a service level agreement (SLA) is put in place.
Many believe that ISPs in the UK should see ComScore’s reports of significant growth in data traffic as an early sign of things to come and should start preparing now for what may soon be coming as broadband connection speeds throughout the country get faster.
Some customer of BT, for example, are now trialling 40Mbps broadband connections as it rolls out its new Fibre-to-the-cabinet FTTC services that does away with the current distance from the exchange problems that are suffered by users connecting over copper wire ADSL connections.
