Projects launched in the hope of developing high speed fibre broadband

The European Commission has recently announced the launch of thirteen projects in the area of high speed fibre based broadband, which are aimed at developing super fast broadband speeds to the home.

There are many different aspects of broadband services that are important to consumers and businesses alike. One of these is the cost of the technology, with both residential customers and businesses wanting to keep their costs down. Another is the reliability of the service, which is important in order to ensure that people are able to make use of the technology. It has been announced recently by the European Commission that thirteen photonics research projects have been launched recently in the area of high speed fibre based broadband. This will come as good news to those looking forward to a future where broadband speeds will get increasingly faster, as the aim of the projects is to enable development into superfast broadband.

The projects are looking into the development of technologies that will see the delivery of internet speeds of up to a massive 1Gbps to the home. Officials from the European Commission selected a range of projects last year and these will be jointly funded by a number of member countries with the cost being over twenty two million euros.

Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission for the Digital Agenda, said: “I’m very happy that research on technology relevant to delivering super fast Internet speeds to the homes and businesses of 500 million Europeans is taking off. Such technology could have a crucial role to play in meeting Europe’s broadband needs far into the future.”
