A recent report has indicated that in a few years time, by 2013, there could be around four million fibre optic connections in use in the UK.

There has been a lot of concern over how the UK is lagging behind when it comes to super fast broadband connections lately, with a range of industry officials as well as government officials getting involved in the debate over how the UK can be pulled up to speed when it comes to its broadband networks.

However, according to a recently released report there could be as many as four million fibre optic broadband connections in use by 2013, in just four years time. The report claims that four million homes and small businesses could be using fibre optic broadband connections by this time. The research also claims that there will be around twenty two million broadband connections across the UK by this time, and therefore based on these figures fibre optic broadband will be used by around four percent of the broadband population.

The report goes on to state that communications giant Virgin Media will enjoy a leading position in the market by 2013, as its existing fibre optic networks will boost its success in the market. However, it is thought that a number of other Internet Service Providers will be hot on the heels of Virgin Media, driving up competition in the market.

One analyst that was involved in the research stated: “There are a lot of other players coming into the market too. So we estimate there will be over 4.4 million fibre lines by the end of 2013.” He went on to state that the predictions that were made in the report, which was based on research carried out by Point Topic, were based on “real plans and activity”.
