Possible hidden charge with some low cost broadband

Experts are now advising that sneaky support call charges that are considered to be very expensive are being used by broadband service providers to make more money on their cheap broadband packages, although this means that they are not such a great deal for consumers.

It was discovered that 32 out of 45 technology companies that were recently tested provided customer telephone support using numbers with a high call charge according to Which?, a leading consumer magazine.

The test found that Supanet and Tesco broadband, which were the tech companies providing customers with broadband services, provided support calls using 090 numbers. These premium rate 090 numbers is considered to be most expensive number currently used.

A simple 10 minute call to the Tesco Broadband support line could mean a cost of around £5 plus a standard network charge being incurred to the customer.

The editor of the Which? consumer magazine, Sarah Kidner recently quoted “It’s particularly galling to see a huge company like Tesco broadband using such expensive lines. If other companies can offer a Freephone number, so can Tesco. After all, every little helps.”

Broadband providers like UK Online, O2 and BT are just a few of the technology companies that were found to be offering their customers free phone support line numbers.

The length of time taken to answer calls made to support line was another aspect that left many consumers frustrated no matter what the cost of the call, according to the research from Which?

There are currently around 17 million broadband connections in the UK according to a recent statement from the telecommunications industry regulator, Ofcom.

The Which? research has summarised saying that the cost of calls to support lines should always be seen as an important factor in the overall cost of a broadband package when consumers are looking for the cheapest broadband package available.
