Pirate Party wants increased fairness over file sharing
A new party, the Pirate Party, has launched in the UK recently, and is aiming to fight for increased fairness when it comes to laws over illegal file sharing amongst broadband users.
There has been heated debate recently over illegal file sharing amongst broadband users in the UK, with some government officials and members of the entertainment industry putting increased pressure on Internet Providers to take serious action against those found guilty of taking part in this activity.
Recently the Business Secretary Lord Mandelson announced harsher penalties that illegal file sharers could end up facing, and his announcement came after he met with a hot shot movie and music mogul from Hollywood. Many other celebrities and entertainment industry big cats also have links and associations with government officials.
However, recently the Pirate Party has been set up in the UK, and officials from the party have said that they want to ensure that laws keep up the pace with technology. The party has said that laws cannot only be based on what entertainment industry groups and government officials want, as this makes them biased. Officials from the party also said that there needs to be increased fairness and more balance when it comes to these laws.
The leader of the party, Andrew Robinson, said: “We are campaigning for laws that keep pace with technology.” He added: “At the moment, big businesses is saying that we steal handbags, and we say let’s talk about what copyright is about.” He went on to state: “We hope to show that a certain amount of the population agree with our issues.”
However, entertainment industry officials continue to argue that this file sharing is damaging the industry and costing it a lot of money, hence the continued battle to reduce the number of file sharers dramatically.
