Opposition parties agree on broadband needs
Whilst the Tories and the Labour Party continue to argue over various issues both have agreed that faster broadband is something that the UK needs.
We have all become used to officials from the Labour Party and the Conservative Party arguing over a variety of issues that affect the country, as well as global issues, but recently officials from both parties have come together and agreed on one major issue that some think is having a major negative impact on the UK. Officials from both parties have agreed that the issue of faster broadband in the UK is one that urgently needs to be addressed.
The Conservative Party leader, David Cameron, has recently stated that the UK has ‘some of the slowest broadband speeds in the developed world.’ He said that when it came to investment in next generation networks using fibre optic technology the UK had fallen behind other countries such as Japan, the United States, and Germany, amongst others.
Cameron stated: “Fibre optic broadband is changing the way people work and do business, and it has the potential to completely transform our economy. It could open up new markets for our creative industries, promote innovation, create family-friendly jobs – as people can work from home – and help reduce carbon emissions.”
This is along the same lines as a recent report from a senior Microsoft official, who stated that faster broadband could help businesses, consumers, and could even help in areas such as medicine. Cameron said that his party aimed to ensure that the nation had fast broadband by 2018. He said that a full scale review would be carried out and that investment in faster broadband would be made more attractive.
Cameron added: “We need to move much faster towards a Britain where fibre right into people’s homes is the norm for everyone, and a Conservative Government will do everything it can to make it happen within a decade.”
