Online retail sales could be improved with universal broadband

It has been claimed that the rollout of universal broadband could result in the level of online retail sales soaring, which is good news following recent dismal figures relating to High Street sales.

It was recently reported that High Street retail sales in the UK suffered badly during the start of this year, with many areas ranging from households goods to food and petrol suffering in terms of sales levels. For many this has sparked fears that the country could be plunged back into recession, having only just managed to escape the recent recession by the skin of its teeth with just 0.1 percent growth.

However, there could be some good news for retail sales with the rollout of universal broadband, with some industry officials claiming that the rollout of universal broadband is likely to result in online retail sales soaring. With many High Street names now also operating online many may be able to make up their High Street losses by increased sales in the online shopping sector.

One of the reasons highlighted for the drop in High Street sales at the start of this year was the cold weather, with many people refusing the leave their homes in the cold weather to go shopping. For those with the ability to shop online this would not be an issue because they could make their purchases from the comfort and warmth of their own homes.

Officials believe that as more and more people get access to higher speed broadband, which is what the universal broadband plan aims to do, an increasing number of people will start making purchases online, which is likely to spell good news for the online retail sector.
