According to a recently released report around one in five households worldwide will have a fixed line broadband connection by the end of this year, equating to over four hundred and twenty million households.

A market analyst group has recently carried out a survey which indicated that the number of fixed line broadband connections in homes is set to rocket by the end of this year. The research was carried out by Gartner, with officials from the group stating that by the end of this year the number of worldwide home broadband connections would reach around four hundred and twenty two million, equating to around one in every five households.

In 2008 there were just over three hundred and eight million households with fixed line broadband connections at home, but officials have said that this number will increase by the end of this year and will continue to enjoy steady growth. By the end of 2013 it is predicted that around five hundred and eight million homes across the world could have fixed line broadband connections.

However, whilst broadband connection numbers are set to grow globally, the UK is set to lost its place as the eleventh most connected country and slip down a place to number twelve. However, this prediction could be affected by the promise from BT that it will offer high speed broadband to seventy five percent of the country if there is the demand for it.

Around twenty countries had fixed line broadband connections in at least fifty percent of homes at the end of last year, with South Korea coming in at the highest with around eighty six percent.
