OECD countries see wireless broadband subscriptions reach more than half a billion

Jun 29 2011 / By William Harvey

According to OECD figures the number of wireless broadband subscription amongst OECD countries topped more than half a billion by the end of last year.

It was revealed recently that figures from the OECD showed that the number of wireless broadband subscriptions in OECD countries had increased to over half a billion by the end of last year, which reflected an increase of ten percent in the space of just six months.

The latest OECD statistics were released as part of a report called the Communications Outlook 2011. The figures showed that growth in the mobile broadband service industry was being fuelled by the rising popularity of smart phones and tablets, which many people now use because of their flexibility, convenience, portability, and ease of use.

On the other hand, the figures also showed that fixed broadband connections had fallen to their lowest level in more than a decade according to reports. Fixed broadband subscriptions grew by only six percent on a year on year basis, totalling three hundred million altogether.

According to officials from the OECD the popularity of wireless internet services is being further driven by cheap, flat rate data plans that are being made available by providers in what has become a very competitive market. It also said that the communications sector had come out of the financial crisis with a “resilience and underlying growth that reflects its role in the global economy”.

Have low prices on data plans encouraged you to go wireless?
