North Lincolnshire to set up team for faster broadband

Jan 12 2012 / By Hazel Chua

North Lincolnshire CouncilBecause of all the benefits of having a fast and reliable broadband connection, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that a fast and reliable broadband connection topped a lot of New Year’s wish lists this year. Specifically, a lot of rural users and establishments placed reliable broadband connections as the top most point in their 2012 wish lists.

In efforts to bring such types of connections to the entire UK, the government has launched the Broadband Delivery UK program. Through BDUK, the government hopes to provide universal broadband access that are at least 2Mbps in speed to the entire country. Aside from that, they are pushing to bring next-generation broadband services to at least ninety percent of the country by 2015.

In line with this, four new posts are being created to be part of a project team to bring faster broadband services to the more rural areas of the region. The South Humber Broadband project will gain a new program director, project manager, project officer and project support officer.

These positions will be filled by existing North Lincolnshire Council employees. These new posts have been reviewed and approved by North Lincolnshire Council leader Liz Redfern.

The team was set up in conjunction with the neighbouring North East Lincolnshire Council, which will be providing extra information and staffing on an as-needed basis.

One of the objectives of the reformed South Humber Broadband project team is to obtain funding from the Government in order to stimulate the commercial investment that the broadband project would require. Aside from that, the team is to work on finding an infrastructure supplier and on managing the eventual broadband roll-out.

These newly-assigned posts were a requirement to make sure that North Lincolnshire will receive its share of the £8.5 million government funding that has been allocated to the various unitary authorities in the Humber region.
