Next gen broadband could benefit the environment

Recent reports have illustrated the many benefits that high speed next generation broadband will provide to the nation, but one industry official has said that in addition to the other benefits next gen broadband could also help the environment.

Over recent months many industry officials have highlighted the various benefits that next generation broadband will bring to the UK when it is up and running properly. This has included increased job opportunities, increased business for companies, more opportunities for consumers, and greater benefits for the economy as a whole. These benefits have been highlighted by a number of industry groups and officials.

However, there is now another benefit that has been highlighted by one industry official. An official from Earth2Tech has stated that next generation high speed broadband could also provide benefits for the environment. She said that amongst the things that could benefit from the environment was the potential ability for companies to replace physical IT products with virtual alternatives. This further adds to the benefits that next generation will provide to the UK.

She added that this could help to reduce the carbon emissions that were generated through certain processes, which in turn would have a negative effect on the environment. She stated: “The build out of high speed ubiquitous broadband networks becomes a means to fight climate change and an issue at the heart of the cleantech industry.”

In the recent Digital Britain Report plans for the roll out of next generation broadband were outlined, and plans were to fund it through a fifty pence a month tax on copper lines that were used for Internet access by consumers. However, there is currently speculation over whether this tax will actually come into play.
