New internet stat centre to be launched by Google

Sep 11 2009 / By Richard Patterson

A wealth of industry insights and facts from five different industries will now be available to internet users as Google quietly launch a brand new resource called “Google Internet Stats”.

Little twitter-sized snippets of information like “Runners have collectively logged over 93 million miles on nikeplus.com – BusinessWeek” or “Over 90% of online merchants are planning to add rich media and social networking functions in 2009 -Internet Retailing” as the stats tool parses through online data, which is provided by a number of third party vendors.

The only strange thing about this otherwise great new resource is that the stat centre uses a number of sources that are global in origin but the resource is hosted on the Google.co.uk domain.

Media Consumption, Consumer Trends, Macro Economic Trends, Technology and Media Landscape are the five key areas that the collection of statistics is broken down into. There are also further subcategories in each of these topics that provide more specific information on these areas.

Users of this resource are able to scroll through the various stats on the site or just generally click around but because it has been created by Google it will obviously have a search facility available to users as well. In order to find more specific information users are able to use the search facility as this makes things for easier.

A great deal of the statistics provided on this resource are oriented towards Europe and the UK and this is because even though it has information from a wide range of global sources Google has chosen to launch this resource from its UK domain. Stats on the user base of a single company aw well as global stats have been mixed in with localized data and one such stat regarding twitter says “although men and women follow a similar number of Twitter users, men have 15% more followers than women,” which is one such example.
