An upgrade to 20Mbps could soon be available at no extra charge to a significant number of Zen Internet customers who live near to one of BT’s 21CN enabled exchanges according to Zen Internet.

It has recently been announced that any customers of the broadband service provider, Zen Internet that live near to an exchange that has had the 21st century technology installed by BT will soon be able to upgrade their service completely free of charge.

The fastest broadband package to be offered by Zen up until now had been an 8Mbps package, although now download speeds of up to 20Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1Mbps are now available on more than half of the UK’s exchanges thanks to the deployment of BT’s latest technology.

At the moment 45 percent of the homes and businesses in the UK are able to access the new technology that has been provided by BT and by spring next year this figure is to increase to 55 percent followed by a further rise in 2011 to a massive 75 percent. Under its current wholesale agreement BT allows a number of other network operators, like Zen Internet, to use its latest technology.

As long as their local exchange is fitted with the new technology from BT any new customer who joins Zen Internet will receive 20Mbps broadband access immediately. Also, according to the latest statement shown on its website, Zen have advised that it has no plans to increase the charges on any of its packages and has no intention of introducing any form of data traffic management over its network.

With regard to this new service a broadband expert said “Zen is one of the first internet service providers to announce it has migrated its network in line with BT’s new technology. Broadband users can expect several other companies to make similar moves in the next days and weeks.”
