Figures that have been released by the communications regulator in the UK, Ofcom, have shown that at the end of the first quarter of this year there were nearly twenty million broadband connections.

It has been reported that at the end of the first quarter of this year there were nearly twenty million broadband connections in the UK. This comes from figures that were released by the communications regulator, Ofcom, with the data showing that there were 19.92 million broadband connections in the fixed line market at the end of March of this year.

Compared to the previous quarter this figure reflected an increase of 340,000 according to the figures. Between September and December of last year around 459,000 new broadband connections were added, which means that the increase between the final quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year was slower than the increased between the third and fourth quarters of last year.

During the first three months of this year communications giant BT increased its market share in the fixed broadband market from 27.5 percent to 27.8 percent. At the end of last year it had 5.39 million customers but by the end of March of this year this had increased to 5.54 million customers.

Rival provider Virgin Media also saw an increase in its fixed broadband numbers, which increased from 4.03 million customers at the end of last year to 4.08 million in the first quarter of this year.
