More people now see broadband as essential

Just ten years ago broadband was something that was considered a real luxury in homes in the UK. However, these days it is seen by most as an essential service.

Whilst many younger people in the UK will not be able to remember life without broadband, there are many of us that will remember the days when there was no broadband or internet to speak of, as well as how those that had broadband in their homes when the technology first emerged viewed enviously by those that could not afford it because it was seen as too much of a luxury.

However, things have changed radically over the past decade in the broadband world, and with the technology becoming more accessible and affordable for the masses there are many households that now have broadband and most would not be able to imagine life without it.

A recent report has shown that more and more people these days view broadband as an essential service in their lives, and this is particularly true of younger people that were brought up in broadband-ready homes. People have come to rely on their broadband services for many things, and some people are so attached to having access to the internet at all times that have both home broadband and mobile internet access.

One industry expert said: “If you aren’t online you are missing out on so many opportunities nowadays, in terms of media consumption, on-demand things like iPlayer [or] on-demand TV that kind of thing.” He added: “It is becoming more and more essential and [important] for some people [who] work at home and rely on an internet connection to carry out their jobs.”

Do you see broadband as an essential service in your home?
